Repurposing Coal-Fired Power Plants

Consumers Energy didn’t just pick a company to demolish and remediate two coal-fired powerhouses—it hired a team specializing in risk transfer and redevelopment. Forsite Development, Bierlein and Energy Renewal Partners (ERP) where chosen to repurpose these industrial properties. The team developed site-specific plans to remove structures, including the recycling of more than 98% of materials generated, and remediated site environmental issues working with state regulators.

Bierlein is performing the asbestos abatement, environmental remediation and demolition of the three-boiler, 328 MW J.R. Whiting Power Plant in Luna Pier, Mich. Its responsibilities include removal of all asbestos, environmental decommissioning and conventional demolition of the boiler house, turbine hall, precipitators, stacks, coal-handling equipment and site restoration.

The team is also performing asbestos abatement, environmental remediation and demolition of the five-boiler, 958 MW B.C. Cobb Power Plant in Muskegon, Mich. Bierlein’s responsibilities include asbestos removal, environmental decommissioning, and conventional demolition of the boiler house, precipitators, turbine hall, coal-handling equipment, 650-ft-tall stack and site restoration. Located on Lake Michigan, this property will be converted into a deep-watermarine terminal.
